Earth Day is April 22nd

Happy Earth Day! April 22nd is a day to celebrate our beautiful planet and everything it provides for us.

It’s also the perfect opportunity to teach kids about caring for the environment while having fun with nature-themed activities.

Earth Day activities can involve hands-on STEM challenges and crafts focused around Earth-friendly themes and eco-friendly practices. In the past, I have worked with our school Parent Teacher Organization to lead a recycled paper project where flower seeds were mixed with blue and green paper to make recycled Earth Day balls that could be planted as seed bombs. This would be a fun way to incorporate kids and families in the new Chaos Gardening trend.

🧑🎨 Easy Earth Day Activities for Kids

1. Get Crafty

Make Earth Day crafts together:

  • Paper mache Earth balls
  • Recycled bottle vases
  • DIY recycled crayons (save and melt down old crayons and pour them into Earth-shaped molds!)

Kids can even use coffee filters for a craft that combines art and science on Earth Day. Let the kids take the lead and see what they create with reused and recycled materials.

2. Go on a Nature Walk

Head outside to explore!

  • Look for birds, bugs, and animals
  • Collect leaves, sticks, or stones
  • Talk about different ecosystems and habitats

Make it into a scavenger hunt or journal what they see! Exploring nature through scavenger hunts can teach children about their surroundings.

3. Learn About Conservation

Keep the day educational by talking about:

  • Recycling and composting
  • Ways to reduce waste
  • Saving energy and water

Community involvement is a key aspect of celebrating Earth Day with students. Have kids make a “Green Goals” checklist to hang on the fridge with ways they can help the planet every day.
